About Academics In Motion About usWHAT IS ACADEMICS IN MOTION?
Academics In Motion (AIM) is a not-for-profit organization that has developed a youth development program that uses athletics as a conduit to greater personal and academic performance on and off the field for children in lower socio-economic neighborhoods.

AIM’s program is based on a philosophy from established principles and recommendations from the leaders in the field of Positive Youth Development. According to Reed Larsen, a professor of Human Development and Family Studies at University of Illinois-Urbana, extra-curricular activities are rich contexts of development. The framework for using sport as a vehicle for youth development include the following key elements of extra-curricular activities that Larsen references: participation is voluntary, structured activities contain a clear system of rules, constraints, goals and rewards, and requires concerted effort over a period of time. When young people elect freely to invest significant time and energy into a goal-directed activity such as organized sport, they acquire attitudes and habits that are instrumental for a smooth transition into adulthood.

AIM, as a holistic program, addresses the many issues underserved youth face today. Sports have a natural fit. The intrinsic qualities of sports create a strong learning dynamic that compliments the academic program. On the playing field, student-athletes learn skills, strategies, relationships, leadership and responsibility. They also remember the importance of planning, of setting goals – for one’s self and for the team. They learn to make plans for achieving those goals. Young people who play sports make a voluntary and often passionate commitment to their activity, enhancing their learning opportunities. Sports provide a performance-based, real-life experience, not an abstract concept. Sports also provide students with an opportunity to shine in a different setting, and to increase their engagement with school. Authentic events improve the learning potential and offer opportunities for the personal growth of the individual student. At their best, schools sports provide an opportunity to teach good sportsmanship and other values. As a public activity with clear rules, immediate accountability and a real outcome, sports creates an environment in which to instill core values such as discipline, respect, responsibility, fairness, trustworthiness and good citizenship. Positive competition and a spirit of excellence are defining values promoted through sports. Given their entrenched popularity and capacity for shaping character, team sport programs can be a positive social force in inner-city school systems.
